Can my student use their phone in the nurse’s office to update me on how they’re feeling?

We completely understand wanting to hear from your child when they aren’t feeling well. The nurse will contact you directly if your child needs to go home or if there are any health concerns. At that time, if you wish to visit with your student by phone, the nurse can facilitate that discussion using the nurse's office phone. We appreciate your understanding as we work to follow the law while still supporting student well-being.

Immunization Information

Immunization Requirements:

Texas state law requires that students be fully vaccinated against specified diseases before attending school. Upon enrollment a complete immunization record validated by a physician or public health personnel must be presented to the school. Students must continue to receive immunizations as they become due in order to remain in school. If you have questions regarding your child's immunizations or, if you need help obtaining immunizations for your child, please call the nurse's office and we will be happy to assist you!

Medical exemptions:

The law allows a physician to write a statement stating that the vaccine(s) required is medically contraindicated or poses a significant risk to the health and well-being of the child or any member of the child's household.

Exemptions for reasons of conscience:

The law allows parents/guardians to choose an exemption from immunization requirements for reasons of conscience, including religious beliefs. Instructions for the affidavit to be signed by parents/guardians choosing the exemption for reasons of conscience can be found at Texas Health and Human Services website.

When to Keep Your Child at Home

Student Wellness and Health Services Communicable Diseases

A principal shall exclude from attendance any child having or suspected of having a communicable disease designated by the commissioner of health as cause for exclusion. Any child excluded for reason of communicable disease may be readmitted, as determined by the health authority, by:

Submitting a certificate of the attending physician, advanced practice nurse, or physician assistant attesting that the child does not currently have signs or symptoms of a communicable disease or to the disease’s non-communicability in a school setting;
Submitting a permit for readmission issued by a local health authority; or
Meeting readmission criteria as established by the commissioner.

Examples of communicable diseases are: mumps, measles, scarlet fever, scarlatina, impetigo, ringworm, pinkeye, whooping cough, and chickenpox.

Keep Your Child at Home When:

Child has a temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.7 degrees Celsius or higher, has diarrhea or vomiting has a rash of unknown origin, has red, runny eyes or wakes up with eyes "glued" shut,
Child complains of ear pain with or without fever

Your Child May Return When:

Fever free for 24 hours without the use of Tylenol or other fever reducer,
is free of diarrhea and vomiting for 24 hours,
rash is no longer visible,
eyes are no longer red,
ear is no longer hurting or
the child has been cleared by a health care professional to return to public school.
